In 1977, Liz had a new baby boy and the prospects of a promising career, launched by a recent appointment as assistant professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School. But family considerations necessitated a move from Boston to Salt Lake City, where Liz joined the staffs of LDS Hospital and the University of Utah Medical School. It was a difficult move.
Dixie Edwards was three years old in 1942 when she got sick with polio. She was put in quarantine in a hospital, isolated from other patients and her family. Her parents were allowed to view her through a one-way mirror: Dixie’s parents could see her, but she couldn’t see her parents. (Parent visitation of a hospitalized child was very restricted at that time). A microphone near the mirror allowed Dixie’s parents to hear her speak. Dixie tells a story about one of those through-the-mirror visits…
