Dixie Edwards was three years old in 1942 when she got sick with polio. She was put in quarantine in a hospital, isolated from other patients and her family. Her parents were allowed to view her through a one-way mirror: Dixie’s parents could see her, but she couldn’t see her parents. (Parent visitation of a hospitalized child was very restricted at that time). A microphone near the mirror allowed Dixie’s parents to hear her speak.
